What goes into your slab.
Before the first truck backs up, five decisions shape how your concrete performs for the next twenty years. Here is what they are, in plain language, and why each one matters.
Strength (PSI)
Concrete is rated by how much pressure it can take before it fails, measured in pounds per square inch, or PSI. The number you pick should come from what the slab has to carry, not from habit or the cheapest mix on the truck.
- 3,000 to 3,500 PSI, sidewalks, light pads, and interior slabs that only see foot traffic.
- 4,000 PSI, most commercial floors, drives, and parking areas that carry cars and daily use.
- 4,500 to 5,000 PSI and up, warehouse floors, loading docks, and slabs under forklifts, trucks, or heavy racking.
Reinforcement
Concrete is strong when you press on it and weak when you pull on it. Reinforcement handles the pulling forces that pull a slab apart. What you use, and where it sits inside the pour, changes how the slab holds up for its whole life.
- Rebar, steel bars tied in a grid for foundations, thick slabs, and anything carrying real structural load.
- Welded-wire mesh, a lighter steel grid for standard flatwork and slabs on grade.
- Fiber, thousands of small strands mixed into the concrete to hold the fine surface cracks together.
The base under it
A slab is only as good as the ground it sits on. The compacted stone and soil under the concrete carry the real weight. If the base is soft, uneven, or holds water, even a perfect mix will settle, crack, and rock over time. Thickness matters just as much, because adding an inch or two of concrete changes how much load a slab can take.
- Subgrade, the native soil, cut or filled and compacted to a firm, even surface.
- Aggregate base, a layer of crushed stone that spreads the load and lets water drain away.
- Slab thickness, sized to the load, commonly 4 inches for light use and 6 inches or more for heavy traffic.
Finish
The finish is the surface you walk on, drive on, and work on every day. It is not only about looks. The finish sets how much grip the surface has, how easy it is to clean, and how well it stands up to wear.
- Broom finish, a light texture for grip on exterior walks, ramps, and drives.
- Steel-trowel finish, a hard, smooth surface for interior floors and warehouses.
- Decorative finishes, stamped, exposed-aggregate, and polished surfaces that add looks and value.
Durability for Michigan winters
Here, exterior concrete freezes and thaws dozens of times a year and takes de-icing salt all winter. Two things protect it, and both happen before the concrete ever hardens. Air entrainment mixes tiny air bubbles into the concrete that give freezing water room to expand, so the surface does not flake and spall. Curing keeps the fresh slab moist while it hardens, which is what actually brings it to full strength.
- Air entrainment, 5 to 7 percent air for any concrete exposed to freeze-thaw and salt.
- Curing, keeping the slab moist through the first days so it reaches full, lasting strength.
- Sealing, an added layer of protection against salt and standing water on exposed flatwork.
